Ongoing Dance Education Programs

Cora Dance Alleghany offers PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN dance education programs for youth aged 5–18 of all abilities and experience levels. During the school year, CDA offers 7 classes per week over a 40-week period, all incorporating a fusion of Modern Dance and Improvisation based choreography. CDA classes take place at the Historic Masonic Theatre and Boys Home. CDA is also offering its second year of an Alleghany-based Cora Youth Company (CYC) for previously enrolled students ready for advanced technical study, giving them the opportunity to learn, perform, and tour a wide range of works by professional choreographers. All of CDA's youth programming will culminate at the 2025 CDA Youth Showcase on April 12, 2025, at the Historic Masonic Theatre. Cora's programs are always PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN to all who enroll and turn no family away based on ability to pay.

The Professional Company - Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance

The professional company Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance (SH/CD) performs the intricate, accessible, sophisticated work of Founding Artistic Director Shannon Hummel. The company was founded in 1998 in New York City, where they developed a reputation for critically acclaimed work that was shared with audiences not only on some of the city's finest stages but also in backyards, living rooms, cars, public parks, and community spaces, bringing dance to people where they live. Beginning January 2023, SH/CD now has dual residency in New York and Virginia, as the resident company in the Historic Masonic Theatre in Clifton Forge, VA, and in Cora's space in Red Hook, Brooklyn, expanding its mission of creating access to professional dance in both urban and rural communities. SH/CD's moving art is presented with an eye toward creating authentic connections between diverse people while also serving as a supportive, healthy model of a professional dance company for Cora's young artists in both VA and NYC.
